We have just added to our collection 500 new audio titles although they are not physically on our shelves.  Where are they, you may ask?

Our library along with 80 other Vermont libraries makes up the Green Mountain Consortium.  Our mission as a newly formed, soon to be, 501 (c) 3 organization, is to provide new library services that would otherwise be too expensive for an individual library.  Our first accomplishment –  Listen Up! Vermont.  The consortium entered into a contract with Overdrive, an online provider of audio materials, whom has successfully been the provider of choice to the state of New Hampshire.  As of March 1st, 2008 our Listen Up! Vermont library is ready for you to peruse from home, save to your PC, burn to CD or download to an MP3 player.  We are so excited!                             (Sorry, but at this time the Ipod is not compatible with this service.)

Once you save an audio book to your basket, you have one week to download it.  After that time period, the file disappears from your basket. There are never late fees or overdue notices.  If you burn the book to CD it is yours forever.  If you download to an MP3 player it is yours until you erase it.  If you download the book onto your PC, the file will delete in a week.  Genres include Classics, Children’s Books, Young Adult titles, Bestsellers, Non-Fiction and Languages to Learn.  Imagine the possibilities, working out at the gym, traveling, outdoor recreation – all with your favorite book in tow!

We have purchased 4 MP3 players for patrons to borrow for a 2-week period in hopes that you will try the service, love it, and purchase your own player.  They are inexpensive and a list of compatible players is available on the website.  Patrons will need to provide their own earbuds or we have them available for $1.

Details:

  • You must be a current library patron.

  • You will need to request your library number to log on.

  • You will need to download free software from the website.

  • Quick Start Guides are available on the website as well.

  • Downloading can be done from your home PC.  You will need to call the library to verify your patron #.

  • For a list of compatible MP3 players please go to Listen Up! Vermont

  • At this time, Ipods are not compatible with this service. (Info on web site)

  • Fletcher Memorial Library has purchased 4 Creative Zen Stone MP3 players to loan to patrons.  You must provide your own earbuds.

This is very easy and downloading is quick.  Give it a try!
