Book Discussion: Thursday, June 26th @ 7PM

Cover ImageThe Friends of the Library’s  book discussion group is revisiting the classic The Age of Innocense by Edith Wharton.  Winner of the 1921 Pulitzer Price, The Age of Innocence is Edith Wharton’s masterful portrait of desire and betrayal during the sumptuous Golden Age of Old New York, a time when society people “dreaded scandal more than disease.”

Copies of the book are available to borrow at the Library.  The group will meet June 26 in the Community Room of Fletcher Memorial Library in Ludlow on Main Street at 7 pm.  Please enter from the rear parking lot of the library. New people are always welcome to come and enjoy a fun, stimulating evening with really nice people.   All of our programs are free and accessible to people with disabilities.

 Mission:

  • To increase public awareness of the library’s facilities and stimulate the use of its services and resources

  • To promote the importance of the library as an informational and cultural force in our community

  • To encourage support of the library through gifts and volunteer services

  • To develop a thorough understanding of the library’s responsibilities and challenges

Friends is an active group of people that meet in support of the library on the 1st Tuesday of the month @ 10AM* in the library’s Community Room.  During our meeting we plan future activities and programming.  *Times/places may vary, so please call the Library to confirm. 228-8921

Generally the Friends host a monthly community program entitled "Third Thursday". This program may range from climbing the mountains of Tibet to Fly Fishing in the Black River.  We are always on the prowl for a member of our community willing to share their unique experience or talent.

Friends also sponsor programs and book discussions provided through the Vermont Humanities Council.  Often these programs include scholar-lead discussions.  Reading material, if provided by the Council, is available through the library well in advance of the program.  We offer an informal book discussion group that is ongoing throughout the year.

Friends extend their services out into our community through their Licensed Day-care Provider program and their Senior Outreach program.  In both cases the Friends visit, read and leave a selection of books to be exchanged on their next visit.

Our annual book sale in August is the largest fundraising event the Friends organize.  Beginning in mid-July the Friends will accept donations of books.  Excluded are textbooks, sets of old encyclopedias and books that are in disrepair.

Friends are very supportive of staff needs providing baked goods, volunteering with projects, staffing, special programming, renewing annually our Movie License and the list goes on.
